Mark Ferguson had been in a car many times while his wife smoked but it
didn't prepare him for his ride with Linda Torrance.  Linda made his wife's
three pack a day habit look tame.  She smoked and coughed continuously.  Mark
wanted to tell her to slow down but he didn't.  For some reason he couldn't
explain, he was intrigued.  He also noted that the more she smoked the more
sense she made.

"Are you taking me home now?" she asked calmly.

"Well Ma'am, I'm sure you're ready to get home and see Pete and Tammy, but I
really think we should stop by the hospital and have a doctor look at you."

At the mention of the word doctor, Linda's eyes bugged out and her chin
dropped to her stomach.  Mark almost lost control of the car as she screamed.

"Not the doctor!  Not the doctor!  Dr. Blacklung no!  No Dr. Blacklung.
Please!" she screamed, "Don't take me to the doctor.  Please!"

Mark was feeling as shook up as Linda Torrance.  What had happened to this
woman?  He tried to calm her down by telling her he would take her home.  He
told her he had a phone in his car and asked if he could call her husband.

Linda nodded and hungrily lit another cigarette as Mark dialed Pete Torrance
at work.

Peter Torrance was overwhelmed when Detective Ferguson told him that Linda
was sitting beside him and that he was driving her home.  Pete told the
detective to put her on the phone but Linda waived the phone off.  Mark
gently explained to Pete that Linda was pretty shook up and it might be
better to wait until he saw her in person.

Peter hung up the phone, kissed his secretary and told his boss the good
news.  His heart raced as he drove the forty-minute drive from his office in
the city to their home in the northern suburbs.
